Common Sense Fossil Collecting
We live under the X

Throw a dart  in any direction while standing in the area of  this photo and you'll probably hit a place that could be rich in Fossils from the Cretacious Period. This is page 1 of 5 featuring nice Fossil finds from the distant past. We always seek out adventure, fossils, a bit of danger and of course fast fashion and fun.

Sulphur River Bed Near Ladonia, Texas

black Mosasaurus Jaw in below- red Scaphite upper middle

Get this... On a hot Texas morning while out on a hunt Laura finds this 4 inch part of the left front jaw bone of a Mosasaur. This animal was a ocean dwelling reptile that grew to be 55 feet long and was a vicious predator with big damned teeth !!  Next to it was a seldom found ( at least by Us on the river) Scaphite which is a type of Ammonoid. Both are over 60 million years old and it's wild to have them end up right next to each other as predator and prey in our collection together.

Excellent bone discovery

A good eye and some careful excavation uncovered a pretty bone. We're still doing researching to identify it. But we're sure it was one of the large Cretacious reptiles.
Below are some typical finds down on the Sulphur River bottom. Known by some as the "Red Beds", this strata is exposed and contains wonderful Baculites and straight Ammonites in both red and black matrix.
I like to photograph these. Since we have collected plenty of them already I usually don't disturb them.

Of course we keep many of the things we discover! A few days of searching will often unearth a collection of fossil bone and teeth. These are some of our discoveries on April 17th and 18th , 2004.
From the Red Beds Some of the collection from one weekend

Lake shores and creek excavation sometimes are rewarding as well
Straight Ammonites in black and red Menabite...a fine example Scaphite...this little guy is one of my favorites

These are some cool finds. The Giant Oyster, ( aka Devil's toenail )is from The Sulphur River The Amminoids are from near the Red River in Northern Lamar County, Texas. None of these looked so good when we dug them up. In fact a few of them were covered in rock and we really had little clue what we would find once we started to chissel away at the concreations that surrounded the actual fossil inside. The big Placenticeras was almost too big to get into the cargo hold of our jet ski and that will hold over 8 cases of beer!
Laura had to dig for quite awhile to unearth the Douvilleceras but man it was worth it. She spent hours after that slowly working away at the concreation that surrounded it to expose this beauty. People think it's a pumpkin when they see it the first time! As for the Oyster...man would I love to suck down a dozen of those babys on the half shell. I guess I'd have to step back about 65 million years and do it with out any cocktail sauce and crackers but I could suffer through it.

Of course, there is no telling what else Laura and I might encounter when we go on an expedition into to wild lands. Snakes... Bad ass animals...heat exaustion... We've seen all that.

"Call Us Adventure Capitalists"

Quite often when we set out on a hunt it is pretty devoid of human life out in the wilds. We like the river beds and the lakes when nobody is there. I guess when it is over 110 degrees people just want to do something else cooler. They don't even go to the lake when it gets that hot here. I like it like that with thousands and thousands of acres to ourselves. Better yet... the damned snakes arn't even around then! I was Lit Up by a rattlesnake a few years back while out fossil collecting and let me tell you it really sucked. The story is wild but that is something I can talk about later.

Sometimes when your out on a walk about when its really hot the mind starts to see things strange. Well you sort of get used to it. But once in awhile you just get a feeling about a weird rock and pick it up anyway.
